Assisting the Enemy

Right now many people are wondering who the anonymous op-ed writer is. I was more interested in the timing of the article. After all, we are approaching the midterm elections. It just seems far too coincidental that this article comes out a few months before the elections, at a time when establishment Republicans like James Comey are urging voters to elect Democrats in order to save the country. I can’t believe this article is a coincidence. In my view, The New York Times got played.
The article wasn’t meant to ease the concerns of Democrats or independents by letting them know that “wiser” people in the White House were keeping the President from really going off the rails. No, this article was all about keeping this administration from losing what was left of its establishment voters. How The Times didn’t see this I just don’t understand. More likely they did see the craven desperation of the writer and wanted to be able to get the scoop and perhaps ultimately gain more access to the White House (especially when Trump is booted out). Of course if the article works, and the Republicans hold both Senate and House, then we are probably all doomed (so much for access then).
If we’re lucky the article will upset Trump’s base, perhaps causing them to doubt it’s worthwhile to support people who don’t support their guy. They may also be turned off by the full-of-himself attitude (I think it is a man who wrote the op-ed) and naiveté of the writer of the article. It’s clear that even though this person is anonymous right now, they’re going to want to be revealed at some point so they can bask in the accolades of glory for saving the nation. The hubris of these people always amazes me, and it’s been evident long before Trump took office (remember Cheney’s belief that the U.S. troops would be greeted as liberators in Iraq?). The reality is Trump will paint the person a traitor and try to sue or jail this individual once the identity is revealed, while the establishment Republicans will just want to forget about the whole fiasco. This certainly will be a career-ender for someone.
Those of us in the real resistance need to make sure to vote this November (and any other time it’s allowed) because even though 2016 should have been the most important election in modern history, it’s really this one that’s going to count.

Clueless White Privilege

I should state up front that I am a white woman, and compared to many in this country I would be considered privileged. There have certainly been times in my life that I didn’t fully grasp that and said and did things that make me cringe now, wondering how I could have been so unaware, but I never had the power mixed with that cluelessness to affect the lives of so many people in such drastic ways. The U.S. Supreme Court does have that power, and appears to have a majority of clueless wonders that are about to do just that. Depending on what poll you look at, anywhere from half the country to three-quarters support the right of a woman to control what happens to her body (i.e. get an abortion), yet it looks very much like that long-held civil right will be taken away by what, I view, is absolute cluelessness of the world we live in, and with five of those justices being white, it really is impossible to not proclaim it white privilege after hearing their comments...

Pro-Death

I grew up in an evangelical church, and as soon as I could escape it, I did. I remember my mother talking longingly about the mansion she would have in heaven and, even at a young age, I felt uncomfortable hearing her talk about her life when she would be dead. It was as though she’d given up on anything good happening in this world, and only had the next life to look forward to. If you read the recent rulings from the Supreme Court it’s as if they’ve given up on anything good happening in this world too, but also are trying to hasten us all, in one way or another, to the “next world.” If the baby that you shouldn’t be carrying doesn’t kill you then the guns that they made even easier to get, and easier to carry around, will. Or if neither of those situations do you in, then tying the hands of the EPA to reign in pollution and other hazardous-to-our-health chemicals will. One of my own coping mechanisms may have some similarities – dreaming of living in another, better, count...

One Mistake

There are so many issues around this Kavanaugh situation that it’s hard for me to pinpoint just one. Anita Hill of course comes to mind, along with Joe Biden’s recent pathetic excuse that he wished he "had been able to do more.” Just a reminder, he was the Chair of the Judiciary Committee during that hearing and knew other accusers of Clarence Thomas were willing to come forward under oath, yet he didn’t call them, which means he could have done more, but chose not to. That’s a very different statement. Of course, with all the stories about Kavanaugh’s friend, Mark Judge , who was also, according to Christine Blasey Ford, in the room at the time of the encounter, it’s hard not to think about another drunk and privileged white male – Brock Turner . Orrin Hatch has actually stated that even if Kavanaugh committed this act against Ford that he thinks his colleagues should focus on the man’s more recent accomplishments, as if this one mistake happened so long a...
